Author R.J. Prieto talks about his book geared to child cancer patients with WINK News anchor Rob Spicker.

(PRNewsChannel) / November 25, 2008 / Fort Myers, Fla. / A book geared to child cancer patients and their families to help them cope was featured on the morning news on WINK-TV, the CBS affiliate station in Fort Myers.

R.J. Prieto relived his own battle with cancer on WINK News This Morning to anchor Rob Spicker.

In the live interview, Prieto explains how his mother kept track of every day during his illness until the week of Christmas when doctors told her to prepare for the death of her son.

The book, geared to child cancer patients and their families, is about Prieto's story of survival told through the eyes of a rabbit and his friends in the forest.

Prieto said on WINK News that he hopes the book would be given to child cancer patients who are in the middle of their struggle to provide hope.

Prieto fought leukemia as a child in 1979. Doctors repeatedly bumped up his medication in an effort to quell complications. Still, a young R.J. ended up in the hospital for three weeks over the Christmas holiday. Prieto says he survived thanks in no small part to the support of his family and others who loved him.

When he started writing 'Dewey’s Christmas Adventure' (ISBN: 978-0-9723233-0-7), Prieto used his own experiences in a story where a group of animals travel to the North Pole seeking a Christmas miracle to heal one of their friends.

The book is aimed at helping child cancer patients understand how to deal with adversity and it’s helping children who are currently fighting cancer by giving them a story of hope and faith.

“Great courage comes from tremendous adversity,” says Prieto. “I know that because I went through it and now I hope others can take my personal struggle and get something out of it.”
