Is There a Best Day to Send a Press Release?

There is one question that we are asked all the time:  Is there a best day of the week to send a press release

So is there really a best day to send a press release?

Each day of the week offers its advantages:  Monday is the start of the week when reporters are most anxious and have had rest so they’re ready to start pouring through pitches.

Tuesday is still beginning the of the week but not quite as crazy as Monday.

Wednesday and Thursday are great days of the week.  Reporters are still feverishly working on stories.

Friday, however, can be a bit problematic–depending on your news.  If it’s big news it will get play on any day.  If it’s a story that requires some digging, Friday is not the best day for it.  Reporters are not likely to start something they can’t finish.  And they’re human–they’re looking to start their weekend as much as the next person.  On the other hand if you’ve got a good, fluffy or compelling or rather easy-story-to-tell, then Friday is the perfect day for it.

As for the weekends, news never stops.  You’ve got less people pitching news stories on the weekends, that is for sure.  But you also have less reporters working.  If the story suits weekends, then weekends may be a great day to send a pitch.  Or, better yet, send the release Friday so the Saturday or Sunday planning editors or reporters receive it.  Those who work weekends generally work Fridays and that’s when they plan for the weekends.

There is no best day to send a press release.  But there are better days to send them depending on the news you’re pitching.
